Man Shot By U.S. Marshals Indicted
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man shot in the leg by U.S. Marshals in Logan Square last month was indicted Wednesday on assault and weapons charges for allegedly pointing a gun at those same marshals.
Jose Giron, 20, of the 1900 block of N. Rockwell St., was formally charged with five felonies, including three counts of aggravated assault, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin.
About 7:30 p.m. on April 29, U.S. Marshals observed Giron with a gun chasing several males in the 2100 block of North Bingham Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.
The marshals announced who they were, he allegedly turned and pointed the weapon at them, Zala said. Fearing for their safety, the marshals shot him.
He was initially taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the upper leg, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.
Belkis Cantor, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Marshals Service Chicago office, confirmed that more than one deputy U.S. Marshal was involved in the shooting. She was not able to say whether they were on or off duty.
Giron will be arraigned on June 7, Conklin said.
