Man Shot By Police On South Side
CHICAGO (CBS) - Police shot and wounded a man overnight after he allegedly pointed a gun at an officer on the city's South Side.
Gresham District tactical officers were patrolling around 11:20 p.m. Monday in the 8700 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, a block known for drug dealing and gang activity, according to a police News Affairs statement.
The officers found several people standing around together, and approached to investigate. One man fled while holding a gun, police said.
When police chased him, the man dropped the gun, only to pick it up again. An officer fired at the man at that point.
But the man kept running and headed down an alley, where he found another officer. Police say he turned and pointed a gun at that officer, who fired back and struck the man in the 800 block of East 87th Place, police said.
The man was survived and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was being treated under police guard, according to the statement. He was reported in stable condition as of 4 a.m., according to a Calumet Area police detective.
No officers were injured, and the man's gun was recovered, police said.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating, as they do with all police-involved shootings.
