Man Shot By Police In Humboldt Park
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was shot by Chicago police officers Sunday night as the Puerto Rican Festival was coming to an end in Humboldt Park.
Police said officers assigned to the festival saw a suspicious-looking man walking with a large group of people around 9 p.m. It appeared the man was carrying a weapon, police said.
When the officers approached, the man ran away. As police chased him toward North and Washtenaw avenues, officers saw a gun in his hand and ordered him to drop his weapon.
Police said, when the man turned around, an officer fired at least one shot.
"The offender fell to the ground. The officer immediately … rendered first aid and applied a tourniquet to the offender. The offender was taken into custody, and was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment," Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy said.
The man, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious to critical condition.
Police said a weapon was recovered at the scene.
A second person was arrested for interfering with the arrest.
The Independent Police Review Authority was investigating.
