CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was shot and wounded by police early Thursday, following a chase on the Far Southeast Side.

The car was a white, two-door Infiniti with firefighter memorial plates, police said.

The man apparently hit a police vehicle with his car, prompting an officer to shoot at him, hitting him in the leg, the statement said.

It is unclear whether the suspect was still in the vehicle when he was shot, but police had earlier said that he jumped out of the car near the 3500 block of East 110th Street, tried to get away on foot before firing his own gun and hitting himself in the leg.

But police later said it was an officer's shot that wounded the man.

He was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in unknown condition, according to a police News Affairs statement.

Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Larry Merritt said agency was investigating the shooting, but would not confirm the man had been shot by police.
