Man Shot By Cops Charged With Aggravated Assault
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An 18-year-old man who was shot by Chicago police officers has been charged with aggravated assault for allegedly pointing a gun at the officers, who were investigating the sound of gunfire.
Estaban Calderon, of the 4800 block of North Drake Avenue has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault of a police officer and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
The charges stem from an incident at about 9 p.m. Monday, when Albany Park District tactical officers were on an assignment near Lawrence and Central Park Avenues and heard shots fired in the area and saw two people run off.
When the officers went to investigate further, one of the fleeing suspects pointed a gun at the officers, and the officer fired, police said.
Calderon was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police recovered a gun at the scene.
The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, confirmed that police shot one person, a male whose age wasn't immediately known.
Just after the incident about a block away, police shot a pit bill was apparently released to attack the officers.
Police pulled over a van in the 4800 block of North Central Park Avenue around 15 to 20 minutes after the suspect was shot nearby, and one of the occupants of the van quickly fled into the yard.
Soon afterward, a third person who had not been in the van released a pit bull toward the officers. One officer shot the pit bull. Gaines did not know the condition of the dog.
The two fleeing suspects were arrested, but were just being questioned Tuesday morning. The suspect that unleashed the pit bull, whose identity was not immediately available, was charged with aggravated assault.
