Man Shot By Cops Charged After Refusing To Drop Knife Following Loop Crash
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Bond was set at $900,000 for a west suburban man charged with attempted murder after he was shot by police while wielding a knife early Saturday following a car accident in the Loop.
Nomad Khan, 20, of the 1000 block of Beninford Lane in Westmont was charged with four counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of aggravated assault to a government employee, all felonies, according to police.
Khan is next scheduled to appear in Cook County court on Friday.
At 1:52 a.m. Saturday, a driver armed with a knife exited his vehicle after a car accident and attempted to harm the other driver at LaSalle and Monroe streets, said police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.
A security guard from a nearby building was injured while trying to intervene between the two drivers, Gaines said. The female security guard was stabbed in the back.
An on-duty police sergeant arrived on the scene and told the driver to drop the knife. The driver refused and came towards the sergeant, who shot the man in the hip.
Two people were taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Knight said. The security guard and the driver were taken to Northwestern, police said.
Two others were taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight, who provided no details on their injuries.
An EMS Plan 1, which sends five ambulances to the scene, was called for the accident and shooting.
