Man Shot And Killed Near Evanston High School
EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- A 21-year-old man was shot and killed outside his grandmother's home in Evanston overnight, just blocks away from Evanston Township High School.
CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports Cardereon Preister was found lying face down in the 1700 block of Leland Avenue, around 11 p.m. Tuesday. That street is about two blocks away from the school building.
Preister had been shot in the upper torso, and was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m. at Evanston Hospital.
"He was just a good person, always smiling, and there for his family. He was a family guy," said one friend who asked not to be identified.
Police said Preister was on parole when he was shot, and detectives were looking into whether his criminal background was connected to the shooting.
Police said they are looking for witnesses to the shooting, and reviewing video they have received from various sources, in an effort to find leads to Preister's killer.
Investigators from the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force were on the scene for several hours after the shooting.
Residents said they didn't see or hear much, but something caught one woman's attention.
"We just hear a big noise, just like a big boom," Patty Rojas said. "When we got out, it was already the police here."
No one was in custody as of late Wednesday morning, and police did not have a description of the shooter.
