Man Shoots At Officer, Escapes
JOLIET, Ill. (STMW) - An armed man got away after exchanging gunfire with a police officer early Saturday.
Around 2:20 a.m. a man driving a silver Chevrolet Impala was seen with a gun in the parking lot of Jameson's Pub, 2755 Black Road, and police put out a description of the vehicle. A few minutes later, a Crest Hill police officer spotted the car near Ingalls Avenue and Gael Drive and attempted to pull it over, Crest Hill Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said.
"Instead of stopping there was a short pursuit (that crossed back into Joliet). The suspect stopped the vehicle in a driveway in the 1200 block of Brentwood Drive," he said.
A man wearing a black hooded sweat shirt and blue jeans began running from the car while carrying a handgun. At the corner of the house, he turned and fired at the officer, who returned fire, Wilkerson said.
"The suspect then ran to a nearby bike path where there was another exchange. The officer was not struck and it does not appear the gunman was injured either," Wilkerson said.
But the firefight allowed the man to get away. A canine unit was called out but was unable to find the man. Joliet police towed the Impala from the driveway and interviewed the resident who owns the vehicle.
Anyone with information is asked to call Joliet police at 815-724-3020 or Crest Hill police at 815-741-5115.
