VIDEO: Armed Robber Targets Subway Restaurants Downtown
CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's not exactly in a location you think a criminal would target: a Subway sandwich shop in busy area of the Loop.
But a robber walked into the Subway -- less than a block from Michigan Avenue and right next door to the Cultural Center – showed a gun and fled with a helping of cash, reportedly $400.
CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports.
"All I could think was: 'I don't know if I'm going home tonight,'" says Darrick Middleton, the employee who was on duty.
"He pulls a gun out of his pocket and he holds it right in front of his stomach, and he cocks it and he says, 'I just want the money,'" he says.
Middleton initially froze but managed to hand over the cash, and the robber left.
It was the same story at another Subway in Greek Town on Feb. 9.
Surveillance video from that robbery shows the suspect casually walking up to the counter and an employee jumping back as the man shows a gun. The employee hands over $300 in cash and the robber leaves, in the video.
Middleton and his boss were surprised to find out police think the same man robbed their Subway and at least 11 other businesses.
"If it's his 12th one, what are we doing? Why we haven't gotten him yet?" says Feroz Fazal, the owner of the Subway robbed Monday.
Chicago police are looking at surveillance video from this latest robbery to see if it can help them catch the suspect. Business owners say they'd like to see more police patrols.
