Man Riding Bike Across Frozen Pond Falls Through Ice

STREAMWOOD, Ill. (CBS) -- A 43-year-old man was hospitalized Monday afternoon after he tried to ride his bicycle across a frozen pond in northwest suburban Streamwood and fell through the ice.

Streamwood police said the man tried to cross the pond near 315 Garden Circle, located near Glenbrook Elementary School, around 3:45 p.m. Monday.

Teenager Jake Korpics was fishing when he saw the rider fall in.

"All he had to do was look around and see there's open water and common sense saying, 'You know what? This isn't safe ice -- I shouldn't go out on it,'" he told CBS 2's Mike Parker.

When the man fell through the ice, Korpics called 9-1-1. A short time later, divers pulled the man out of the icy water and took him to a nearby hospital in good condition.

He was treated for hypothermia.

The incident came on the heels of a Sunday tragedy. A 47-year-old Johnsburg father died after he fell into an icy pond while playing hockey with his son.
