Man Dies After Being Pulled From Lake In Edgewater
UPDATED 02/06/12 8:12 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The efforts of Chicago firefighters weren't quite enough to save a man who fell into Lake Michigan over the weekend.
Police rushed to the lake at Bryn Mawr Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Sunday for reports of a man trapped in the water.
A woman had called 911 to report that a man had been trapped near a breakwater at the scene, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Fire and police personnel quickly responded to the scene.
"We had to deploy two divers in order to facilitate the rescue, because of the way he was wedged into the rocks inside the water there just off of the shore here," said Fire Department diver Reuben Zendejas.
Shortly after 11 a.m., Fire Media said the man was taken out of the water by fire department divers and taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said the man was in his 50s, but had not released his identity as of Sunday evening. He was pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m. Sunday.
