Man Pleads Guilty To Murder, Sexual Assault Of Ex-Girlfriend In Woodridge
(STMW) -- A west suburban man pleaded guilty Monday to fatally stabbing and then sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Woodridge in 2012.
Adam Belmont, 26, of Northlake pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to the DuPage County state's attorney's office.
About 9 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2012, Belmont went to ex-girlfriend Alyssa Van Meter's apartment on Forest Drive in Woodridge, climbed up a balcony and through a window, prosecutors said.
Once he was inside, the two got into a fight and Belmont choked Van Meter until she was unconscious, then stabbed her once in the chest, piercing her heart, prosecutors said. He then sexually assaulted her before running away.
Belmont was arrested later that night without incident.
"This afternoon, Adam Belmont took sole responsibility for the murder of Alyssa Van Meter," state's attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement.
"While his admission of guilt in this horrific case will not bring Alyssa back to those who loved her and miss her, perhaps it will help them begin to gain some measure of closure in this horrible chapter of their lives," Berlin said.
Belmont is next scheduled to appear in court June 15 for a pre-sentencing report; and will be sentenced June 23. He faces 20-60 years in prison for the murder charge, and 6-30 for the sexual assault charge, to be served consecutively.
