Man Pleads Guilty To Attacking Woman, Raping Child
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (STMW) -- A northwest suburban man pleaded guilty but mentally ill Friday to beating a woman with a hammer, raping a child and stabbing a dog during a 2012 crime spree at a friend's home.
Daniel J. Happ, 29, of Carpentersville pleaded guilty but mentally ill to one count each of felony attempted murder, predatory criminal sexual assault and attempted animal cruelty, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's office.
Happ was socializing at the home of a female friend in the 1200 block of Brookdale Drive in Carpentersville on March 6, 2012, when he stabbed the family dog multiple times with a kitchen knife, leaving it bleeding on the living room rug.
Happ , of the 1600 block of Seminole Drive in Carpentersville, then took a claw hammer and beat the woman in the face and head multiple times, the state's attorney's office said.
He then showered, got an 8-year-old girl out of bed to show her the injured woman and dog, and told her he would do the same to her and her three siblings if she did not obey his wishes. He then sexually assaulted the child.
Happ will be back in court at 9 a.m. October 15 for possible sentencing. He faces 12 to 93 years in prison, according to prosecutors, but the guilty but mentally ill plea allows the Department of Corrections to place him in a mental health facility, though he still must serve the full sentence.
