Man Killed In West Englewood Hit-And-Run
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police were searching for the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run collision in the West Englewood neighborhood Tuesday night.
Terrell Walker, 47, was crossing Ashland Avenue at 64th Street around 9:15 p.m. to buy a sweet tea at McDonald's, when he was struck by a car. The car never stopped.
Paramedics took Walker to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died.
Chicago police later found the black car involved in the crash. The driver had ditched it about 3 blocks away from the scene. The car had a busted windshield and front end damage, but he driver was nowhere to be found.
Walker's sister, Deidra McCray, said the driver should surrender to police.
"Please, turn yourself in. He was loved. He do have a family. Please, if you do anything, put my mother at ease. Turn yourself in. You're already in trouble. You don't need to make it go any deeper than it's already went," she said.
Denise Tolbert, who lives nearby, said she isn't surprised someone was struck by a car at 64th and Ashland.
"It's kind of hard to cross through here. It takes you at least five minutes to cross through here. That's not the first person that got hit. You've got children going to McDonalds, you've got the daycare, and it's just terrible," she said. "If they put a four-way stop sign, or something, to make the pedestrians stop, then maybe … it wouldn't be that many accidents."
Tolbert said people rarely stop for pedestrians, even though there's a lot of foot traffic from the nearby CTA Green Line station, a busy McDonald's, and a daycare center.
Police said investigators know who owns the car involved, but have not yet located the driver.
