Man Killed In Fireworks Accident In NW Indiana
LOWELL, Ind. (CBS) -- A 26-year-old man from Lowell, Ind., was killed in a fireworks accident on the 4th of July.
WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports Nicholas Saberniak was setting off fireworks at his home with his family at about 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday.
Lowell Police Chief Shelhart said Saberniak was using mortar shells – fireworks that are dropped into a tube before they are shot off – and was using a homemade tube, when a shell exploded in his face.
Saberniak was taken to a hospital in nearby Crown Point, Ind., and then airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead around midnight.
No one else was injured in the accident.
