CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was seriously early Friday in a fire that broke out in the Southwest Side's Chicago Lawn neighborhood.
The fire erupted in the basement of a 1 1/2-story home at 6231 S. Whipple St. around 4:30 a.m., Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said.
A man in the basement was exposed to the fire, and had to be rescued by firefighters. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, MacGregor said.
Crews put out the blaze in about 30 minutes, MacGregor said. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Friday morning.
The Chicago Red Cross sent a team to the site of the fire early Friday to see if anyone there needed assistance, according to the agency's official Twitter feed.
