A still-and-box alarm was raised for the fire at 2:30 a.m. A neighbor who called 911 told responders that a person was probably trapped inside, Langford said.

Upon entering the home, firefighters found the man in the rear of the home, he said.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man in the back of an ambulance as they took him to Roseland Community Hospital, but he was not responding, Langford said.

The man was eventually resuscitated at the hospital. He was later taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he remained in critical condition as of later Thursday morning, Langford said.

Crews extinguished the fire shortly after 2:30 a.m., he said. The fire started in the front of the home, but the cause remains unknown.
