Man In 60s Killed In Washington Park Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A person of interest is being questioned in connection with the shooting death of a 67-year-old man in the Washington Park neighborhood Tuesday morning.
The victim was shot in the chest and buttocks near 61st and King Drive around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The victim was later identified as 67-year-old Billy Sergent.
Sollie Fitts was at home wither her granddaughter when she heard shots fired.
"I heard four shots real loud right out in front of the house, so I ran to check on her to make sure she wasn't in the window," said Fitts.
When she looked out she could see Billy Sergent fighting for life.
"He was still moving. You could still see his body moving up and down breathing," said Fitts.
Police are talking to a person of interest who sources say is fourteen years old. Witnesses say the teen opened fire at about 8:45 this morning. Sources say he missed his target and shot Sergent instead.
Seenie Barnes was Sergent's longtime neighbor.
"It hurt me because he was so sweet," said Barnes.
Police were back at the scene interviewing store owners and looking for possible witnesses.
