Sometime Tuesday night, Gennadiy Plaksa, 44, of Palatine, showed up at the home of Alina Rybnikova, 22, looking for her mother. When he couldn't find his ex-girlfriend, police say Plaska stabbed her daughter multiple times in the foyer of the house.

He then dragged her body to the garage, police said.

Police say Plaska then waited for the young woman's mother to show up, and when she did, he attacked her, tied her up and beat her.

Plaska was angry with his ex-girlfriend for ending a two-year relationship, police said.

Somehow, Plaska's ex-girlfriend got him to leave. He then went to his car parked outside the house, and shot himself in the head.

Police say when Rybnikova's roommate came home around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, she found Rybnikova and her mother, and called police.

The mother was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, and survived the beating. But Rybnikova was dead.

"From the period of about 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock in the morning, (Plaska) had her subdued in the home. She was able – as this was a relationship that she had had with him that had been ongoing for approximately two years. It had come to an end, and that would appear to be the motive of what caused this struggle and these outcomes to occur," said Mundelein police Chief Ray Rose.

Neighbors were shocked by the gruesome acts.

"It's frightening; it's scary, not knowing what's going on," said Dana Gordon, adding that she did not know the family.

"It was a mother and daughter, and I think they were both working people. You know, when I would see her, she would come in, she'd park, and she'd have her dry cleaning in her briefcase and stuff, go in the house, and that was it," said neighbor Kathi Macaluso.

"Obviously, it's an unfortunate situation everywhere you go, and when it's right here in your own neighborhood," added neighbor Pete Miles. "One of the first thoughts I had, 'Was it something? You need to be concerned about moving forward. Is this a problem area?'"

Neighbors say the daughter had lived in the area for about six months, and police say the mother has been living in Wisconsin, but visited her daughter frequently.

Autopsies are expected to be conducted on Plaska and Rybnikova's bodies later Wednesday.
