Man Gets 6 Years For Cubs-Sox Beating
ELMWOOD PARK, Ill. (STMW) - As an Elmwood Park man awaits his day in court, his brother will be spending time in jail following a brawl in which the brothers and another man are charged with causing a Gurnee man to lose vision in one of his eyes because of a beating based on baseball team allegiances.
Jaroslaw Czapla of Huntley was sentenced Wednesday to a six-year jail term, a $500 fine and two years of probation that includes avoiding alcohol during that time for the incident that happened at a family birthday party July 19, 2008.
Awaiting trial is Boguslaw Czapla of Elmwood Park. Also charged was Maciej Trojnar of Elmwood Park, who is considered a fugitive.
According to police, the Czapla brothers and Trojnar, who are Chicago Cubs fans, teased victim Robert Steele for being a White Sox fan. The teasing then escalated, resulting in injuries to Steele. Jaroslaw Czapla is the brother-in-law of the victim and godfather to the victim's son.
