Man Found Shot To Death In SUV In Gary
GARY, Ind.(STMW) -- A Gary man was shot to death while he was sitting in a car at a northwest Indiana intersection Tuesday morning, the Post-Tribune is reporting.
DeWayne Young, 39, of the 500 block of Virginia St., was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. at the scene.
Residents in the area of 1600 Delaware Street in Gary reported hearing gunshots about 9:30 a.m.
Moments later, police learned of a shooting victim in a black Chevrolet Blazer. When Cpl. Anthony Hawkins and Patrolman Shanesha Emmons arrived, they found the Young seated in the driver's seat. The SUV appears that it had been parked at the curb at the northwest corner of the intersection. The engine was off.
Several windows on the car were broken out, but police said it wasn't known which ones were related to the shooting.
Cmdr. Sean Jones and Lt. Del Stout arrested a man who lives on the block because he was inside the crime scene and argued with officers when they told him he had to move.
Investigators spoke to several people gathered at the scene, but had not identified any eyewitnesses to the shooting.
Anyone with information about the homicide can call Sgt. Dan Callahan at 881-1210.
Young is the 40th homicide in Gary this calendar year. In 2012, the city recorded 43 for the entire year; by this date last year, there had been 30 homicides.
