Man Flips Out, Smashes Windows
OAK PARK, Ill. (CBS) - A Forest Park man who said he was frustrated because he could not find an open pharmacy in south Oak Park on Saturday night allegedly used a hammer to smash five windows of businesses along Roosevelt Road.
William L. Smiley, 30, of 7500 block of Jackson Boulevard in the near west suburb, was arrested by Oak Park police at 12:55 a.m. on Sunday and charged with three counts of criminal damage to property. He was turned over to Forest Park police who charged him one count of criminal damage.
Police said Smiley was involved in breaking windows in the following incidents:
• Two 42-inch-by-6-foot exterior plate glass windows on the Jewel Store, 7036 Roosevelt.
• A window at BC Body Craft, 7050 Roosevelt.
• An 18-inch-by-6-foot exterior plate glass window by the entrance door to Salernos Pizza, 7128 W. Roosevelt.
• Cracking a plastic window pane on the Ver Halen Engineering building, 1010 S. Harlem Ave. That space is leased by an attorney.
"Apparently he was upset," said Oak Park Detective Cmdr. LaDon Reynolds, who said Smiley didn't appear intoxicated in any manner. The incident report indicates Smiley was upset at not being able to locate a pharmacy.
Forest Park Deputy Chief Tom Aftanas, who said Smiley had a hammer in his possession Saturday night, which he allegedly used to break the windows, said Smiley did not make any statement to his officers.
Aftanas said his department is still investigating.
"(Ver Halen) has security video," he said. "We're waiting to see if (the incident) was captured on videotape."
Smiley was taken to a bond hearing Monday morning.
