"He reported that he had found a bag of money in his back garden," said McHenry County Undersheriff Andrew Zinke.
It turned out to be two bags of money, with up to $200,000 cash inside.
Zinke says it is not clear how the money got there, but it does not appear to have been there long.
"It was on top of the garden," he said. "It was not buried. It did not look like it was buried. It did not look it had been in the backyard for very long."
Zinke says the money may have been dropped after a residential or commercial burglary.
He is crediting Sabaj for his honesty after turning it in.
Anyone with information about the money is asked to call the McHenry County Sheriff's Department, at (815) 338-2144.
