CHICAGO (STMW) - A bus fatally struck a northwest suburban man who jumped out of his vehicle early Sunday on the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side.
An autopsy Sunday determined the motorist, Robert H. Vreeland, 24, died of multiple injuries from a motor vehicle accident and his death was ruled a suicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Vreeland was driving south on the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) and jumped out of the vehicle about 2 a.m. just north of the 67th Street exit, Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper Mark Hall said.
The unoccupied vehicle continued south on the expressway, and Vreeland climbed over the cement retaining wall onto the CTA tracks, across another cement retaining wall and into the northbound lanes, where a bus with five passengers aboard then hit him, Hall said.
ISP Master Sgt. Jeff Kashmier said the bus involved was a tour bus and no citations were written to its driver.
Vreeland, of Rolling Meadows, was dead on the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.
