Man Fatally Shot Near Arlington Heights
PALATINE TOWNSHIP, Ill. (CBS) -- A 34-year-old maintenance man doing work near his apartment home in Palatine Township was gunned down Saturday morning.
Neighbors say this isn't the kind of complex accustomed to violence. They describe the victim, Abel Oliva, as a good man and dedicated father.
Though authorities say there were no witnesses and they have no apparent motive, they are following several promising leads.
"He didn't deserve this, not at all, not this man," neighbor Nina Sanchez says.
On the spot where Oliva collapsed after being shot several times about 9:45 a.m., neighbors lit candles and prayed the Rosary in Spanish.
Nearly a dozen Cook County Sheriff's detectives combed building after building in the large Whispering Winds Condominium complex near Arlington Heights. Acting on good leads, their work collecting evidence stretched form mid-morning to well into the evening Saturday.
Authorities say Oliva was gunned down outside one of the buildings. Residents say the quiet and respected father of four young children was on the job, tending to the buildings and grounds.
Neighbors say Oliva was gunned down in a parking lot and stumbled to a side yard after being shot. Friends called his wife, who ran to his aid. Paramedics rushed Oliva to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
It's believed Oliva and his wife had few if any relatives in the area.
An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
