Two Slain, Three Wounded In Maywood Crime Wave

MAYWOOD, Ill. (STMW) -- Police are beefing up patrols on 19th Avenue in Maywood Sunday because shootings there have left two men murdered and three other people wounded Saturday and Sunday.
As of Sunday afternoon two men are dead and three other victims are recovering at a hospital.
The latest attack wounded a man and a woman early Sunday at 1:46 a.m. in the rear of a building at 228 S. 19th Ave. said Maywood Police Chief Tim Curry.
"We learned that Taurean C. Wilson, 22, of Maywood, was parking his car in the back when an unknown person started firing shots at him,'' Curry said.
A 21-year-old woman was also inside the vehicle and Wilson shielded her with his body.
But the woman, who Curry identified the woman as Raven Hendrix, of Maywood, was shot. Hendrix and Wilson are both recovering at Loyola University Medical Center as of Sunday afternoon.
"It's the third shooting in two days on 19th,'' Curry said.
The most recent murder claimed the life of 27-year-old Johntue Tate, who was shot 11:53 p.m. Saturday at 842 S. 19th Ave., according to Curry. That address is near Tate's home.
Tate was with a group who were watching a boxing match at a residence at that address but he and another man, Donald Williams, went outside for a moment, said Curry.
"That's when the gunman came out of a corner of a building and started firing shots at them,'' said Curry.
Curry said 20-year-old Williams was shot in both legs but survived the attack and remains hospitalized at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, but Tate, of 811 S. 19th Ave. in Maywood, was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood at 12:32 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
An earlier murder happened early Saturday on that same on that block in the near west suburb and claimed the life of a Chicago man, Vincent Frazier, Jr.
About 3:45 a.m. someone shot Frazier Jr., 25, inside the common area of a building at 847 S. 19th St., according to Curry.
Frazier, of the 5500 block of West Chicago Avenue, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where he died, according to Curry.
An autopsy Sunday determined Frazier died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.
Police as of Sunday night do not have an idea of what the motive is for attacks along 19th Avenue.
"I don't have a motive for any of them,'' Curry said Sunday afternoon but added investigators have not had a chance to talk to all of the surviving victims.
"It may be coincidental or there may be something brewing,'' Curry said. "Twenty-hour hours is not a lot of time to determined a pattern or a reason. We're trying to figure out what the motive is,'' according to Curry.
But Curry said the community "will see a heightened police presence.''
"Normally 19th is not a bad street,'' he said.
No arrests have been made.
