Man Fatally Shot By Round Lake Police Officer

ROUND LAKE (CBS)-- A man was shot and killed by a Round Lake police officer late Friday in the north suburb.

Just before 11 p.m., the officer was dispatched to the 0-100 block of North Macgillis Drive in Round Lake, according to Det. Chris Covelli, spokesman for the Lake County sheriff's office, which investigates officer-involved shootings in the suburb. Multiple people had called 911 saying a suspicious man was banging on doors of homes on the block and trying to force his way into at least one of them, Covelli said.

When the officer arrived, the man confronted him with a piece of broken glass and the two got into a physical struggle, Covelli said. The officer then shot him at least once.

Other Round Lake officers arrived and tried to resuscitate the man, but he died at the scene, Covelli said. He was identified as 22-year-old Michael Robert Musson of Grayslake.

The officer who opened fire was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries and released early Saturday. Per department policy, the 12-year veteran was placed on paid administrative leave as the Lake County Major Crime Task Force investigates the shooting, Round Lake Police Chief Michael Gillette said at a press conference Saturday morning.
