Man Fatally Shot By Police On South Side

Updated 1/1/11 - 8:50 p.m.CHICAGO (WBBM) - Police shot and killed a man on the South Side early Saturday when he allegedly tried to run over an officer with his car.

Tory Davis, in his 20s, of 447 W. 118th St., was fatally shot by police and pronounced dead at the scene at 935 E. 79th St. at 4:27 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

At 1:52 a.m., officers were working Operation Safe City, a federally funded overtime initiative in which officers are deployed to high-crime areas on the weekends.

Police became aware of a traffic crash that happened in the 800 block of East 79th Street and attempted to curb a car witnesses sad was involved in the accident, according to a police statement.

The man's vehicle was stopped at a nearby gas station and when officers attempted to order him out of the vehicle, he instead began moving his vehicle in an attempt to hit one of the officers, the statement said.

The officer was placed "in fear of his life" and discharged his weapon, fatally wounding the man, the statement said.

An autopsy performed on Saturday reveals Davis died of a gunshot wound to his shoulder and his death was ruled a homicide, a Cook County Medical Examiner's office spokesman said.

The victim of the traffic rash was taken to an area hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Calumet Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, are investigating.

An IPRA spokesperson did not respond to calls for comment early Saturday.
