Man Dies In Police Custody In Kane County
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (STMW) - Authorities are investigating the death of a 20-year-old man who died in custody at the Kane County jail.
Keith D. Renfroe, 20, was booked into the Kane County Adult Justice Center at 6:24 p.m. May 18 after Gilberts police arrested him for criminal trespassing, according to a release from the Kane County Sheriff's office.
Renfroe was placed in a cell by himself about 6:40 p.m. and a corrections officer saw him standing by the sink/toilet area of his cell about 1:55 a.m. on May 19, the release said.
When the officer conducted his next check at 2:12 p.m., he found Renfroe lying face down. Medical staff performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took him to an area hospital, the release said.
Renfroe remained at the hospital until 2:40 p.m. on May 24, when he was released from custody after being removed from life-support at his family's request, the release.
The sheriff's office is investigating and an autopsy was inconclusive, pending toxicology reports.
