Worker Dies After Being Struck By Log In Lockport
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 38-year-old man died Monday afternoon after he was struck in the head by a log while working in southwest suburban Lockport.
Police responded to Homer Tree Service in the 14000 block of Archer Avenue at 1:37 p.m. and found a man bleeding heavily from the head, Lockport Deputy Police Chief Ron Huff said.
The worker was identified as Brad T. Harders of Genoa, according to the Will County coroner's office. He was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he was pronounced dead at 2:01 p.m.
Harders was working on a piece of equipment that cuts logs into boards when he was struck in the head by a log, Huff said, adding that it did not appear the machine malfunctioned.
Harders was employed by Total Staffing and was working for J & M Wood Products, according to a statement from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. He was not an employee of Homer Tree Service.
Lockport police determined the death was accidental and turned the investigation over to OSHA, which has opened an inspection into the incident.
