UPDATED 10/04/11 8:55 a.m.
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (CBS) -- A Hoffman Estates man is dead, after suffering burns all over his body during a fire and explosion at his home on Monday evening.
David Mugerditchian, 60, of the 1000 block of Hillcrest Boulevard in Hoffman Estates, suffered burns to 96 percent of his body Monday during fire and explosion at his home, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
"It came in 8:20 a.m. as a report of an explosion and a fire in the backyard," said Hoffman Estates Police Sgt. Darin Felgenhauer. "The man was found in the back yard badly burned."
Mugerditchian was pronounced dead at 7:19 p.m. Monday at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to the medical examiner's office.
Felgenhauer said no one else was injured and the victim was initially taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates and then airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, which has a burn unit. Mugerditchian was pronounced dead at 7:19 p.m. Monday at Loyola, according to the medical examiner's office.
Felgenhauer said a shed in the backyard had been burning, but the victim was not found in the shed. It was not known how the explosion or fire started or what the victim had been doing at the time.
"There's no indication there was any foul play," the sergeant said. "Right now, it's in the hands of the fire investigators."
Felgenhauer had no information on reports that Mugerditchian had previously saved someone else's life in a fire.
