Man Dies After Crashing Into Wall In Portage
PORTAGE, Ind. (STMW) -- A 24-year-old Gary man died after a single-vehicle crash at 7:07 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 12. It is unknown why his vehicle slammed into the concrete wall supporting the west side of the bridge into U.S. Steel, police said.
Investigators are attempting to determine what caused the crash.
Although ice contributed to a number of other collisions across the region Wednesday morning, "we have no reason to believe there was ice involved" in this fatality, said Sgt. Keith Hughes, public information officer for the Portage Police Department. He noted there were no skid marks.
Hughes said the man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of all family members, was traveling east on U.S. 12 just before the crash. Heavy front-end damage pinned him behind the steering wheel. He was extricated and flown by helicopter to Advocate Christ Medical Center, in Oak Lawn, Ill., where he died, police learned Wednesday afternoon.
Police are trying to learn about the deceased's last few days, which could provide a medical explanation for the crash.
