Man Dead, Others Hurt In South Side DUI Crash
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man is dead and three other people were injured in a DUI crash early Sunday in the East Chicago neighborhood.
Steven Libner, 49, of 4736 E. 1351st Rd. in Earlville, was involved in a crash at 10200 S. Indianapolis Ave. and pronounced dead at 4:15 a.m. a Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Police said the two-vehicle crash happened about 3 a.m. and killed the passenger. The fire department said one of the vehicles hit a pole.
Authorities said Libner was riding in the backseat and was not wearing a seatbelt.
Two other people were in the vehicle in which Libner was riding -- the man driving and a woman passenger, police said. The adult male driver was the only occupant of the other vehicle.
In addition to Libner, paramedics took two people in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and one person in fair condition to Advocate Trinity Hospital, according to the fire department.
Investigators are calling the crash DUI-related, but it is unclear early Sunday which driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
