Man Critically Injured In I-80 Crash
HAMMOND, Ind. (STMW) - A Gary, Ind. man was critically injured Friday night after crashing his pickup truck on Interstate 80 in Hammond, Ind.
Indiana State Police responded about 8 p.m. to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 westbound at Cline Avenue, according to an ISP release.
David C. Wilson, of Gary, Ind., was driving a 1999 Dodge pick-up in the far right lane of Interstate 80, when the vehicle went across all west bound lanes and hit the concrete barrier wall almost head on, the release said.
Wilson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown onto the passenger side floorboard, the release said. Police found several empty and full beer bottles in the pickup.
Wilson was taken in critical condition to Saint Catherine's Hospital in East Chicago, Ind. with head and neck injuries, the release said. He also tested above the legal limit of .08% for alcohol.
The far left lane was closed for approximately 1-½ hours, the release said.
Last year, 135 people were killed on Indiana highways as a result of impaired drivers, and nearly 25 percent of all fatal crashes were alcohol-related.
