Man Critically Injured In Fiery Crash On Bishop Ford
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Charges are pending against the driver who state police say caused a fiery three-car accident on the Bishop Ford Freeway that left one man critically injured late Tuesday in south suburban Dolton.
The crash happened about 10:15 p.m. in the outbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Sibley Boulevard, according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Mike Dolis.
A 28-year-old man was behind the wheel of a car that rear-ended an SUV, causing it to roll over onto the shoulder and burst into flames, Dolis said.
The 60-year-old man driving the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and onto the grass beside the freeway, causing head trauma, lacerations and burns to his upper body, Dolis said.
He was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and later transferred to the burn unit at Stroger Hospital, state police said. His injuries weren't thought to be life-threatening.
After rear-ending the SUV, the 28-year-old's car struck another vehicle merging onto the freeway, causing minor damage and no injuries, police said.
Alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, police said. Charges are pending against the 28-year-old.
Outbound lanes near the crash were closed to traffic until about 3 a.m. as crews cleared the scene.
