Man Dies After Jumping Onto Red Line Tracks
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man is dead after he jumped from a CTA train Sunday afternoon in an apparent suicide on the South Side, police said.
Police responded about 3:30 p.m. to a report of a man who jumped from a Red Line train near 75th Street, according to a Gresham District police captain.
Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said paramedics took the person in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Police said the man, in his 50s or 60s, died at the hospital.
The man may have come in contact with the third rail and suffered electric shock and lacerations, Langford said.
The CTA turned off power on the Red Line tracks in both directions between 63rd and 95th streets, CTA spokeswoman Shelia Gregory said. Power was restored at 4:02 p.m. and trains began running before shuttle bus service was initiated.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
