Man Crashes Into Bus After Shooting, Dies
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A gunman opened fire on a van on the city's South Side overnight, sending the driver of the van careening into a CTA bus before he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
The victim, Darius Sarley, 22, was behind the wheel of a van parked in the 6800 block of South Calumet Avenue, in the Park Manor neighborhood. A 19-year-old man was in the van with him, police said.
Around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, someone walked up to the van and fired shots. Sarley was shot squarely in the chest, while the younger man suffered a graze wound to the chest, police said.
After being shot, Sarley sped away in the van and hit a nearby Chicago Transit Authority bus, police said.
Soon afterward, paramedics took the two men in the van to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where Sarley was later pronounced dead, police said. The 19-year-old passenger was listed in stable condition at the hospital.
The CTA bus driver was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski said passengers on the bus told authorities they were injured, but refused medical treatment. She said she did not know how many people were on the bus at the time of the crash.
No one was in custody for the shooting as of early Wednesday, but police said they had a good lead. Area Central police detectives are investigating the shooting.
