Man Charged With Stabbing Girlfriend To Death In Little Village
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man who allegedly fled after stabbing his girlfriend to death in their Little Village home was ordered held on $1.5 million bond Monday.
Aaron Mejia, 19, of the 2200 block of South Sacramento Avenue, was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder, police said.
Mejia and Rosa Maria Perez were arguing when he stabbed her, police said.
Perez, 27, was found unresponsive in the home about 10 a.m. Thursday and was declared dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy determined she died of multiple stab wounds.
Her body was found in a closet in the home, where the couple lived with two of Mejia's relatives, prosecutors said during a bond hearing Monday.
Perez' family said the couple had been dating for about three years.
Prosecutors claim Mejia told a family member that he killed her, and also told the relative where he threw the knife used in the stabbing.
Detectives later recovered the knife, and Mejia admitted to authorities after his arrest that he stabbed Perez multiple times, prosecutors said.
Perez grew up in Chicago and had a 12-year-old daughter, her family said. She was currently working at a West Side clinic.
"She was very happy," her mother Juanita Guerrero said. "She got along with a lot of people. She was very outgoing."
Mejia initially fled, but was arrested Saturday, police said. He was ordered held on $1.5 million bond, and will next appear in court Dec. 13, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.
