Man Charged With Slamming Into State Senator's Brother

CHICAGO (CBS) - A 24-year-old Southwest Side man has been arrested and charged after the hit-and-run accident that injured the brother of State Senator Tony Munoz.

State Senator Tony Munoz says he is gratified that someone was arrested in connection with the hit-and-run accident outside an Archer Avenue polling place yesterday.

"Not only because it hit my brother, but no one should leave the scene of an accident,'' said Munoz. "That's why it's called an accident. An accident occurs, simply leave the vehicle right there or pull over if you can and check on the person that was just struck."

Munoz says his brother, 40-year-old Martin Munoz, is doing better but will have a recovery of three to four months.

Jason C. Bergmann, 24, of the 4800 block of South Archer Avenue, was charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident with injuries in the Tuesday morning incident.

Witnesses noted the license plate of the vehicle, which was located a short distance away, police said. The vehicle registration led police to Bergmann's home, and he was arrested without incident.
