Man Charged With Robbing Mount Prospect Bank
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man made off with more than $34,000 but was arrested soon after robbing a bank in northwest suburban Mount Prospect last week, according to the FBI.
James Cagney, 20, walked into the Bank of America branch at 1080 S. Elmhurst Road about 3 p.m. Tuesday and handed a teller a deposit slip that said "all money in the bag. Be quiet or be killed," according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago.
Cagney handed over a bag, which the employee filled with $34,649 in cash, the complaint said.
After Cagney left and the teller hit a silent alarm, a Mount Prospect police officer spotted a man matching the description trying to hail a cab about a mile away in the 600 block of South Elm Street, prosecutors said.
When the officer questioned him, Cagney said he was "the guy they were looking for," prosecutors said.
He is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown.
