Man Charged With Murder In 3-Month-Old Daughter's Death
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Jefferson Park neighborhood man stands charged with murder in the death of his 3-month-old daughter, who died this week as a result of injuries from child abuse.
Jovanni Tufele, 23, of the 5100 block of West Ainslie Street, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jayden Tufele, who was pronounced dead at Children's Memorial Hospital Tuesday. An autopsy on Wednesday determined she died of multiple injuries from child abuse and her death was ruled a homicide.
The baby's mother was also being questioned on Wednesday, but no charges had been reported against her as of Thursday afternoon.
Police said Jayden suffered a fractured collarbone, four rib fractures, bleeding on the brain in two areas and retinal hemorrhages in both eyes. She also had suffered two rib fractures that had been healing.
Allegations of abuse against Jayden's mother and father are being investigated by the Illinois Dept. of Children and Family Services, according to DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe. He said there were no other children in the home and the agency has had no prior contact with the family.
Jovanni Tufele is scheduled for a bond hearing Friday in Violence Court (Br. 66) at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse.
