CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 27-year-old man has been charged with stabbing his 3-year-old son to death after raping and stabbing the boy's mother on Friday in the Austin neighborhood.
Gregory Sandifer, of the 900 block of Bowling Green Drive in Homewood, has been charged with one count each of first degree murder, aggravated domestic battery and criminal sexual assault, police said.
Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered Sandifer held without bond on Sunday, according to a Cook County Criminal Court clerk. Sandifer is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.
He was hospitalized Sunday morning and a mugshot was not available.
After stabbing the boy, Sandifer allegedly pushed the 25-year-old woman out a window then jumped from the second-floor in an attempt to escape, police said.
The boy -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Jaivon Sandifer -- was pronounced dead at 12:18 p.m. Friday at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. A Saturday autopsy determined he died of multiple stab and incise wounds and the death was ruled a homicide.
Leslie Scott, a relative, said the mother told her after she escaped that the baby's father had the child upstairs and was going to retaliate by killing the 3-year-old.
Witnesses said when police arrived they went into the apartment looking for the suspect, but he had fled. The suspect hid in a garage, but was quickly captured.
Sandifer was hospitalized Sunday at West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park for an ankle injury he suffered when he jumped from the second floor, according to a police report.
According to the report, Sandfier and the woman were arguing when he allegedly displayed a knife, sexually assaulted her then stabbed her multiples times in the chest, neck and arms.
The woman wrestled the knife from him and threw it out the window. She tried to flee from the window, but Sandifer allegedly punched her in the head and body, picked up a television and hit her with it before pushing her out the second floor window, according to the report.
When police got inside the apartment and saw the suspect holding a knife, Sandifer fled to the back of the residence and jumped off a second-floor rear porch and fled northbound, the report said.
The woman told officers the man who attacked her was her boyfriend.
A description was issued; officers began a manhunt and found the suspect inside a garage at 5035 W. Crystal St., the report said.
Sandifer allegedly told officers: "I'm tired and thirsty from fighting," the report said. He was arrested after police positively identified him as the suspect and other officers found the boy's body, the report said.
The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was initially listed in critical condition, the report said. She needed treatment for stab wounds and for injuries suffered after allegedly being pushed from the window and sexually assaulted.
