Man Charged With Killing 84-Year-Old Mother
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 54-year-old man has been charged with stabbing his 84-year-old mother to death Friday morning in the Northwest Side Dunning neighborhood.
Joseph Nerone was charged with one count of first degree murder, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said. He was expected at a bond hearing Sunday.
Police were notified just after 9 a.m. Friday of the fatal stabbing at the home in the 3800 block of North Normandy Avenue, according to News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.
That is where the victim, Elaine Nerone, 84, was found, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. An autopsy Saturday found Elaine Nerone suffered multiple stab wounds and multiple blunt force trauma, the medical examiner's office said.
Neighbors said the woman's son suffers "mental issues."
Patrick Hyland Jr., who lives a few houses away, said, "We all knew it was only a matter of time. We all knew he was crazy." Hyland and other neighbors said police were repeatedly called to the home when the son grew violent or aggressive, more than 20 times last year alone.
"Police were here all the time," he said. "As soon as the father passed away four years ago, all hell broke loose."
Another neighbor said they called police after not being able to contact the victim on Thursday, and officers entered the home Friday morning and found the body.
"When I saw this [police tape], I knew that either he was dead or she was dead."
