Man Charged With DUI In Lawndale Crash That Injured 5
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police say a man was driving his van drunk when he caused a rollover crash that left five people injured in the Lawndale neighborhood Thursday morning.
The motorist was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries at Mount Sinai Hospital Thursday morning, but he has been cited with DUI, and several other traffic violations, according to an Ogden District police sergeant.
The sergeant said the man remained under police guard as of 9:30 a.m. but he will be bonded out. None of the charges are felonies.
A van struck a truck near the three-way intersection of Ogden and Harding avenues and Cermak Road about 1:20 a.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.
Three people in the truck -- a 21-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman and a 24-year-old woman -- were hospitalized following the crash, Gaines said. A 45-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman who were in the van, were also hospitalized.
Two people were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said.
One person was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, MacGregor said.
An Emergency Medical Services Plan 1, which automatically sends five ambulances to the scene, was called about 1:30 a.m. and secured at 2 a.m., MacGregor said.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating, Gaines said.
