Man Charged With Breaking Police Officer's Eye Socket On West Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A south suburban man is charged with elbowing a Chicago Police officer on the city's West Side, an act that broke the officer's eye socket.
James Phillips, 39, of Country Club Hills, is charged with one aggravated battery to police and three counts of resisting arrest in the Tuesday afternoon incident.
At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a "person with a gun" call in the 2100 block of South Pulaski Road when they encountered Phillips, who was being loud and verbally abusive, according to police.
Officers ordered him to leave three times, but he refused, so police approached and were trying to put handcuffs on him when a scuffle broke out, according to police.
Phillips allegedly elbowed a police officer on the left side of the face, causing that officer to suffer a broken eye socket, police said. The officer, who is in his 30s, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in an unidentified condition, police said.
Officers used pepper spray on Phillips, who is 6 feet tall and 210 pounds; and he was placed under arrest.
Phillips was charged with one count of aggravated battery to police and three counts of resisting arrest. He was expected to appear for a bond hearing Wednesday.
