Man ordered held charged in stabbings that killed woman, critically hurt her 2 sons in Chicago
A judge ordered the man charged in the deadly stabbing of a woman and kidnapping and stabbing of her two sons last month to remain in custody following his first court appearance Friday.
Marcus Bausley, 40, was taken into custody by Chicago police and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Task Force on Thursday around 11 a.m. in the 2200 block of North Main Street in Crown Point, Indiana.
He was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder, two felony counts of attempted first-degree murder, two felony counts of aggravated kidnapping, two felony counts of aggravated battery to children under 13, and aggravated battery with use of a deadly weapon.
What started as an Amber Alert became part of two other reported incidents by police.
Prosecutors give a timeline of events
Prosecutors said Bausley and the victim, Teone Jones, were dating for 6 ½ years. They were not in a relationship but had a co-parenting agreement at the time of the incident.
Around 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, Jones went to lunch with a friend, where she received a phone call from Bausley. Location data showed that he was about a block away from Jones. She then went to the friend's home, who also received a call from him threatening to harm the two.
After which, Bausely, wearing a light-colored jacket, picked up and dropped off a prescription to his mother at her home before returning to the residence in the 7100 block of South Eberhart Ave.
Around 4:40 p.m., Jones called her mother to inform her that she had made it home to the residence where Bausely and her sons, 8 and 4, were present. The 4-year-old is the only child of the two.
According to prosecutors, between when she arrived home and 5:45 p.m., Jones and Bausely, armed with a knife, got into an argument that turned into a fight. The 8-year-old heard Jones shouting at Bausely to open their bedroom door. He went to check on her and found that the door was locked.
After the door opened, Bausley and Jones went to the top of the stairs, where he pushed her down the stairs, met her at the bottom, where she was on the floor, and began stabbing her with the knife.
The boy went behind him and yelled for him to stop. That's when Bausely turned and stabbed the boy multiple times in his body. He then told him to put a coat and shoes on the 4-year-old, and all three left the residence, prosecutors said.
Prior to this, he sent a group message that included his mother saying, "If something happens to me take care of my son please."
After leaving the home on Eberhart, he was captured on surveillance video dropping off the 4-year-old at his mother's home. He then drove to the area of Ogden and Ridgeway, where Jones' oldest son, 12, was at basketball practice, and picked him up around 6:35 p.m.
Several hours passed since Jones' mother heard from her or her grandchildren, but prosecutors said she did get multiple messages from Bausley's mother about his behavior.
Jones' mother then went to the Eberhart home where she knocked to no answer. She also saw blood in the hallway and through a window.
After climbing through the window, she searched the home before finding Jones at the bottom of the basement stairs. She began CPR and called 911.
Jones was taken to the hospital by paramedics, where she died from stab wounds to her back, chest, arm, and hand.
The light-colored jacket worn by Bausely when he picked up his mother's prescription was found covered in blood inside a trash can inside the residence, prosecutors said.
Amber Alert issued for missing 8-year-old boy
The alert was issued for the 8-year-old and contained a description of Bausley's car in the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 21, but it was later canceled after he was found safe.
Prosecutors said after picking up the 12-year-old, Bausley drove back to the South Side where the car was tracked by plate readers and his phone data. The vehicle was later captured around 7:15 p.m., parked at 66th and Yale, where he stabbed the boy.
The 12-year-old was then seen getting out of the car and running away. He went from house to house, screaming for help while bleeding. A passerby heard him and called 911.
The boy told first responders it was his stepdad who stabbed him.
Bausley remained in the area for several hours before he was tracked to the area of 79th and Damen. He dropped off the 8-year-old at a Citgo gas station around 3:38 a.m. after the boy, while still suffering from stab wounds, told him he was thirsty. The child was seen on surveillance buying a bottle of water before leaving the station.
A half-hour later, Bausley messaged his mother and told her where he left the child. Police found him in the 8200 block of South Damen with several stab wounds to his chest, back, and hands. He also identified Bausley as the person who attacked him and his mother.
Police said both boys were taken to Comer Children's Hospital hospital in critical condition. Both have undergone multiple surgeries.
The 8-year-old suffered stab wounds, including one to the chin, two to the right side of his chest, one to the left side of his chest, one to his right hand, and one to his back.
The 12-year-old suffered from stab wounds to the stomach and has undergone surgeries for injuries, including a punctured spleen, a punctured pancreas, and a punctured liver.
Bausley was arrested in Indiana after a pursuit
Following a police pursuit on I-65 in Merrillville, Indiana, Bausley was arrested around 10 a.m.
A plate reader alerted officers of the vehicle he was driving, a silver 2022 Ford Escape mentioned in the alert. Minutes later, it was spotted on I-65 near U.S. 30 in Merriville. The Lake County Sheriff's Department helicopter assisted in the pursuit.
After being boxed in by police, officers demanded for him to exit the vehicle, to which he refused.
According to prosecutors, Bausley stabbed himself several times before putting the knife to his neck. He was then arrested and then taken to the hospital for evaluation.
He spent 36 days in jail for resisting arrest.
Prosecutors say Bausley and Jones had a history of domestic-related incidents
Prosecutors said that the two had been previously involved in domestic incidents, including Oct. 18, 2024, where Bausely accused her of being at a restaurant with another man. He began to call her anonymously from another another and messaging her through social media after she blocked him. She later found the windshield of her car busted with a brick in the back seat.
It was reported he called her over 200 times in two days.
On Christmas Day, Jones reported to police that she and Bausley were arguing at the Eberhart residence when he punched her in the face. She also told police that he grabbed a handgun and threatened to kill her and himself. She was able to calm him down.
After he put down the gun, she grabbed it and threw it out the window. After he left, she went and grabbed it and turned it into the police station while making the report.
Bausley was ordered held in custody and is due back in court on April 9.
