Man Charged In Random Stabbings At Southwest Side Walgreens

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 21-year-old man stands charged with a stabbing spree that left three random people injured at a Southwest Side Walgreens drugstore.
As WBBM Newsradio 780's Regine Schlesinger reports, Daniel Lopez of the 5100 block of South Spaulding Avenue was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of aggravated battery.

As of early Wednesday morning, Lopez was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at Holy Cross Hospital. Wednesday afternoon, bond was set at $3 million and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 9.
Police say Lopez is the man who walked into the 24-hour Walgreens at 5435 S. Kedzie Ave. around 1 a.m. Tuesday wearing a hood and clutching a butcher knife, and began stabbing everyone in sight for no apparent reason.
A 35-year-old male worker was stabbed in the hand, a 66-year-old female customer was slashed in the chest, and a 40-year-old female customer was stabbed in the abdomen, arm and thigh.
The suspect then tried to leave the drugstore, but police caught him quickly.
"One of the cops came out with a guy arrested, with very long hair, black pants, kind of like a rocker style, and just actually pushed him against the cop car and got him in there, and the guy just looking like he was kicking the cop," witness Ivonne Alvarez told CBS 2. "Even his shoe flew off."
One of the women remained in the hospital Wednesday morning, with what authorities describe as non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say they know of no motive, and the attack appears to have been random and unprovoked.
