Man Charged In Fatal Aurora Hit-And-Run
AURORA, Ill. (STMW) - A west suburban man was ordered held on $150,000 bond Thursday after being charged with a hit-and-run crash that killed a Michigan man as he walked back to his car after running out of gas early Sunday.
Rocio V. Garza, 22, of the 100 block of West Van Buren Street in Elmhurst is charged with one count of failure to report an accident involving personal injury or death, a Class 1 felony, police said.
Garza was ordered held on $150,000 bond Thursday and his next court appearance was set for Jan. 10, a release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office said.
The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. Sunday on Butterfield Road, just west of North Eola Road, Aurora police said. Garza was driving eastbound on Butterfield when he struck Robert Vincze, who was walking alongside the road, the release said. After striking Vincze, Garza drove away.
Vincze, 30, of Michigan, was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead at 5:13 a.m., police said.
Police learned Vincze and another man were walking east on the south side of Butterfield Road when an eastbound vehicle struck Vincze from behind, police said. The men were walking back to the car, which had run out of gas.
Garza stopped for a short time, then fled prior to the arrival of police and paramedics, police said.
Police learned of his involvement through a tip and took him into custody without incident Tuesday night at his home. The vehicle was located at a Lombard body shop and seized for evidence, police said.
Elmhurst and Chicago police assisted in the investigation.
