Man Charged In 100 MPH Drunken Crash
NAPERVILLE (STMW) -- A 24-year-old man is free on bond after allegedly driving drunk down a busy street at a top speed of 100 mph and then crashing his car into two parked cars and a streetlight on Naperville's far east side.
Lisle resident Nicholas Songco was arrested and charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and single counts of driving 40 mph or more over the posted speed limit, reckless driving and improper lane use, according to Naperville police.
Songco was arrested about 2:53 a.m. Sunday after crashing his car at a strip mall at the southwest corner of Chicago Avenue and Naper Boulevard, along the Naperville-Lisle border.
A written police bulletin stated Songco was "observed driving through the downtown area at a high rate of speed," and was soon after "found crashed after leaving the roadway."
Police Sgt. Lou Cammiso said Songco was behind the wheel of a tan, 2002 Chevrolet Impala and driving east on Chicago Avenue from Columbia Street, near the campus of North Central College. Songco allegedly "was speeding 100 mph" on that stretch of Chicago Avenue, where the speed limit is posted at 35 mph, Cammiso said Tuesday via e-mail.
The Impala soon after "crashed into a light pole and two parked cars near Chicago and Naper," Cammiso said. The crash scene is more than a mile to the east.
Songco was traveling alone at the time and was not seriously hurt in the crash. No other injuries were reported.
Cammiso said Songco offered "no reason for the speed" when confronted by patrol officers.
An examination of court documents indicated Songco has no criminal record in DuPage, Kane and Will counties. His arraignment date in DuPage County Circuit Court is pending.
