Man Charged After Trying To Abduct 10-Year-Old In Englewood
City Workers Hailed As Heroes
CHICAGO (CBS) --Two city workers are being hailed as heroes after stepping in and saving a boy during an attempted kidnapping Thursday morning.
George Graves, 57, is now charged with attempted kidnapping in the case. He is being held on $250,000 bond.
CBS 2's Mai Martinez talked with the women who helped put him behind bars.
Alfreda Clark and Mary Baggett might not think they're heroes, but the father of the would-be victim begs to differ.
"They're my city heroes," says the father, who asked that his name not be revealed.
Clark and Baggett, two Streets and Sanitation workers, stepped in to help his son when the 10-year-old said a man started chasing him while he was walking to school. The boy says the suspect followed him into an alleyway.
The women were surveying overgrown lots in the area and saw the child and drove over to check on him.
"He had fear all over his face, and so I said are you alright?" Clark says.
She saw the man and told the child to get in their car.
Baggett called 9-1-1 and gave police the man's description. A short time later, Graves was arrested. The child later positively identified him.
The women were glad to help.
The child's father says his son is doing OK, but had trouble sleeping Thursday night.
He says he's thinking about moving his family out of the neighborhood because he's worried about what will happen if the suspect gets out of jail.
